Why is this news?

April 18, 2009 at 7:01 pm (Music News) (, , )

I check the “general music news” over at Ultimate Guitar rather often. Sometimes they post good stuff, but I’m starting to notice more and more that some things are put up as news articles that simply don’t need to be “news.”  Today’s example? Eddie Van Halen shoes. Honestly, who gives a shit? Any dorky EVH fanatic that actually wanted his dorky shoes that he wears on stage is probably dorky enough to check the VH site constantly and would already know about it…whereas the rest of us are left saying…”why?”

Yes, yes, laugh at the irony of me using my “music news” category to file this post, but seriously. This is lame.

Liam Gallagher nooooooo

March 19, 2009 at 9:55 pm (Music News) (, , )

Liam Gallagher, lead singer for Oasis, has started a fashion label called “Petty Green.” At first I thought it was a joke. I mean, this is Liam Gallagher. He’s a jokester (albeit a pretentious one). Then again, at the same time, I wouldn’t put this silliness past him.

U2 Way

March 10, 2009 at 7:26 pm (Music News) (, , )

So yeah, a street in good old New York City has a street temporarily renamed “U2 Way,” to celebrate the release of U2′s most recent album, No Line on the Horizon. Cool? Hardly. I suppose it would be slightly cool if it was celebrating, say, The Joshua Tree. But the new album? Nah. And honestly, wouldn’t it make a lot more sense for this commemorative street naming thing to happen in Ireland, where the band is from? AC/DC Lane is in Melbourne, Australia, after all.

Well, whatever. Have fun Bono, I guess.

Degree in the Fab Four

March 3, 2009 at 3:27 pm (Music News) (, , )

So a university in Liverpool, the hometown of The Beatles, is now offering a degree in the study of The Beatles. Yes, that’s right. If you go to Liverpool Hope University, you can get a Master of Arts degree in “The Beatles, Popular Music and Society.”

You know, despite me being a big Beatles fan, I can’t help but wonder how much is too much. It is certainly arguable that the Liverpool boys were the single most important and influential band in the world when it comes to the development of rock and pop music. I can understand courses on them, but an actual degree? Then again, it’s probably not a bad idea. However, I really think it should be expanded.

I can see it now: an entire course on Paul is Dead with a two-week analysis on “Glass Onion.”
