Now playing.

Pikmin 2: Why is this series so overlooked by everyone other than the major Gamecube players? It’s such a fun series, full of vibrant creatures and general silliness…and the concept of the gameplay is as innovative as it gets on the Cube. Of course, Pikmin 2 is way better than the first one, being longer, harder, and not limited to 30 days. Can’t wait for Pikmin 3.

The World Ends With You: I actually got this game last December, but I hardly played it. Just got too caught up with other games to play. But recently my girlfriend got it as well, and she’s been playing it, so that made me want to go back and pick it back up again. Great game. The battle system is creative, though very hard to master. And of course, “modern RPGs” are always welcome.

Jet Grind Radio: Playing the above game made me want to go back and play this a bit, because they both have a lot to do with Japanese youth and the Shibuya district of Japan. The clothes and attitudes, etc. are the same in both games. But Jet Grind Radio is an amazing game in its own right, although very, very strange.

Ikaruga is a masterpiece.

April 5, 2009 at 11:17 pm (Video Games) ()

Well, the sad truth is that shoot-em-ups like Ikaruga, Gradius, Darius, etc. are still dying out. More and more each year, it seems. Last year saw the re-release of Ikaruga on XBLA, but hardly anyone seemed to care. It’s sad to see such a cool genre of games being so unpopular outside of Japan.

Now, I own a lot of these kinds of games, especially on the SNES, Genesis and Saturn. But my favorite one ever is Ikaruga, of which I own the first re-release on the Gamecube. I have a Dreamcast, but I really felt like playing the re-release more because I love the hell out of the Gamecube controller. Those Wavebirds are sexy to this day.

5 reasons that Metroid is the best video game series ever.

March 28, 2009 at 3:48 am (Video Games) ()

When it comes to being a geek, there are two areas that I excel in: music and video games. Considering the overwhelming amount of musical content in this blog, you probably already knew about the first. But video games have been a passion of mine for a lot longer.

However, it was a long time before I even knew what the hell Metroid was. Like many others, I saw Samus the first time in Super Smash Bros. on the N64. Soon after I turned into a pirate and started using SNES and NES emulators to play supposedly great games that I had missed before. One of them was Super Metroid. At first it was just okay. Then I played a little more. Hmm, this is getting good. Suddenly I’m running around Brinstar for hours. Shit, this is amazing! To this day, Super Metroid is my favorite Metroid game and one of my favorite games ever

I’m on an NES high.

March 25, 2009 at 1:53 am (Video Games) ()

So I recently bought a NES off someone in my dorm hall. I got the console with seven games, two controllers, the correct cords, and a zapper light gun. Now, one controller doesn’t work, but it looks cool in my collection anyway so whatever. Most importantly, though:

1.) The whole deal was only $60, when normally $60 is around what only the console would cost (with cords and one controller). After all, it’s an old console, and a very popular one at that, so prices are naturally high online, which is basically the only place to get it easily.

2.) Other than the one broken controller (actually, the start button works!), everything works just fine. Well, fine for an NES, considering it’s like the glitchiest system anyone’s ever owned. You know, blow on the cartridges and whatnot. Actually though I haven’t had to blow on them just yet.
